the unofficial official review form

Posted by krssvr - May 6th, 2009

i think we should develop an unofficial standard for reviews (even though i know its impossible to stop spam reviews) so people know what artists want to know

i think ellebirdy23's reviewing method is helpful and informative so as ignored as this post might be here we go:

Here's the review card:

Instrument Blend--- 0/2
Accuracy--------------- 0 - 0.5/1
Clear Concept ------- 0 - 0.5/1
Originality------------- 0/3
Appeal----------------- 0/3

(ROUNDED UP)
Total------------------- 0/10

Instrument Blend:
This Section here would be to explain to the artist if the sounds used in the song mix well together and to make sure they do not sound out of place and/or random.

Accuracy:
this section should review how the overall sound of the song is created whether it be an original song or a remix of something. this section can be used to judge how "on key" the notes are with each other or if the tempo is handled well and all the instruments/percussion are well meshed together.

Clear Concept:
This Section would cover whether the song that you are reviewing was created for the reason it might have been created for, for example if someone made a song called "stroll through the woods" and the song just didn't seem to fit the description then it would affect your review accordingly. (not as important as other sections becasue some songs may have titles that might not be relevant but that would not mean the song could not be good)

Originality:
This Section would pertain to how "fresh" a song is or might be, if it just didn't seem all to original then your review would be affected accordingly (this would be one of the more important sections)

Appeal:
This Section would be about how the song affected you and would have personal opinions (and maybe even controlled bias's ) did it appeal to you? or is it just another song on newgrounds (an outlet to support personal opinions without bashing/destroying the artists in the process)

tell me what you think, and thank ellebirdy23 for using this helpful reviewing system

Comments

That's quite a good reviewing system for reviewing audio. However you might want to actually clarify that it's for reviewing audio.

OMG i was sure i put that in the title lol

I just went through your reviews and no offense, but I believe it's time to start using your system.

yeah i know that. that's why i came up with one :|

Hey, you got this one pretty down ^_^

I will clear up a bit on what I put under each section, and you can just take it at face value really, because a review--structured or not--is a personal thing.

Instrument Blend:
-whether or not the instruments fit well TOGETHER
-whether or not the instruments are a good choice for the song
(really what you had said was pretty accurate)

Accuracy:
This one varies, and is mainly for songs that are remixes:
-judging notes to make sure they are the correct notes/or to make sure any intentional changes to the melody make sense.
-judging whether the beat (if there is a beat) fits with the notes; making sure that the rhythm is synchronized.

Clear Concept:
This section I use to pertain to whether the song feels like it has a REASON to be there. A lot of the time, people will just remix a song without any really drive to do so, and what you end up getting is just some piece of non-inspired crap.
Another point I make in this section is with originals; if a melody/harmony line sound like it's just there to fill time, you bet I'll notice it and make note in this section.

Originality:
this one is pretty cut and dry; if it sounds like the same old remix, points down in here. On the other hand, if it's something new and creative, I'll give you points.

Appeal:
This is the section I encourage people to look at the LEAST (which is why sometimes I don't even include it at all.) This section I leave to judge completely without regards the technical make-up of the song; this section is all about what the listener likes and dislikes according to his or her own tastes. That way, the rest of the review can be objective.

And then I usually put a little "Other Comments" section in at the end, to disclose any other comments that don't necessarily fit in these categories.

So there you go. Thanks for "voting" for my review criteria to be a standard. I would hope that it won't be though... I don't want anyone to HAVE to justify their love of a piece of music; after all, music is a personal thing, and we should be able to express ourselves accordingly.
